We've only been married for a little over 6 months but I am ready for a challenge. After we decided that we should take vacation for our 1 year anniversary, I needed something to do. Something to keep us busy during the long winter.....
A couple weeks ago, Basset Buddies Rescue (BBR) posted on their FB page that they were getting in 13 hounds (yes 13!) from a neglect situation and they needed foster homes. Shaun and I decided this was the challenge we were looking for.
I submitted a Foster Application that day and we waited....and waited....and waited. Until Saturday, when I received a call from BBR. They asked me a few questions and then said, "We have a hound for you. We should have him available for you to pick up tomorrow Can you do it?"
Um yeah, I suppose we could...
Come Sunday, I hadn't heard all of the details until about 11. So after that our day went from boring to CRAZY! We left my parents house about 1:30, stopped off at our home to drop Sadie and Kitty, and were on the road by 2. We got down to Oshkosh around 3:30 and pick up our first foster...Walter.
They think Walter is around 3 years old. He has been moved around A LOT in his few years of existence. From living in warm, sunny Florida, to cold, icky Wisconsin. His original parents could no longer take care of him so he was pawned off onto his grandma and grandpa who had two older dogs already. Walter wanted to enjoy his younger years and play and have fun. The older dogs weren't having it and snapped at him. On top of this, he was having accidents in the house. The second parents said enough and turned him over to the Wisconsin Humane Society.
When we first picked Walter (we call him Wally) up, we thought he looked like he was mix with some other type of hound. But after seeing him run and spending a little more time with him, we definietely think he is mixed with Beagle.
Without further ado, here is Wally when he first arrived at the WI Humane Society:
What a cutie!!
Here he is on the way to our home:
When we got home we introduced him and Sadie. Sadie was a little unsure at first but then they did the "let's run in a circle and smell each other" ritual and all was good. They chased each other in the back yard for a while. We then went for a walk and gave Wally his bath (he smelled like urine..uck). Shaun said he did good, only tried to get out once.
The rest of the evening was spent on the couch watching the Packer game. Wally really wanted to be on the couch with us but as a foster he has to earn his privileges. So after a lot of "no's" we finally were able to get him to snuggle into the BBR bed that we picked up at Bassetfest. We tried putting him in his crate for night-night but he howled and whined for 5 minutes before we decided that we wanted to get sleep. So we brought him upstairs and he slept in his bed all night! And even better he didn't mess!! Go Wally!
Today, however, will be a challenge. Shaun and I are both at work all day and he is home alone in his crate :( I will go home on my lunch hour. So wish us luck that he doesn't mess!
