Baby #2 is HERE!!!

At my 39 week appointment, the Dr said I was 2 cm dilated which was significant progress from the week before.  The few days after the appointment involved contracts, lots of low back pain, and the loss of my mucus plug.  But at the end of each work day, the contractions had stopped, the low back pain dissipated, and nothing more followed after the mucus plug.

So after work on Friday, we went out for Chinese hoping the salt would coax baby out.  As our middle of the night on call person was gone, my parents were set to arrive later that evening.

Early Saturday morning, around 3:30 a.m. I woke up with some pretty intense contractions.  These contractions were different than what I had felt earlier in the week.  These were lower in my pelvis.  I stayed in bed until about 4:30 when they started to become really uncomfortable lying down.  When I got up, I started timing them and they were pretty consistent.  Then after about an hour they died down.  In effort to keep them going, Shaun and I took Sadie for a walk.  It did not help much.  I was down to a few sporadic contractions.

So we had breakfast with Tavin and my parents.  Then my mom and I went to a garage sale.  I had a few contractions while out and about and they were starting to get more intense.  When we got home, I did some laundry and played outside with Tavin.  During some of the contractions, Tavin was quite concerned as to why I was doubled over, but Shaun reassured him that "mom was thinking."

At around 11 a.m. I had some bloody show.  The contractions were still inconsistent, anywhere from 5-10 to 15-20 minutes apart.  I went and talked to Shaun and told him it was time to go in.  We decided to wait until after lunch.  Unfortunately, the lunch my mom was making wasn't going to be ready until almost 1 p.m.  My mom rushed some of the lunch to get done and I was eating around Noon.  The contractions continued to get stronger.

By the time we left the house, it was closer to 12:45.  I had a few contractions in the car (=hell) and the walk to the hospital (due to construction) felt like an eternity.  After getting checked in and changed into the hospital gown, the nurse checked me.  She said I was 5 cm and pretty stretchy.  She commented that my doctor would likely break my water to speed up the birthing.

When my doctor arrived and checked me, I was 7 cm.  She broke my water and the contractions intensified and were coming right on top of each other.  While I was breathing through the contractions, they were trying to get the saline lock/IV put in.  Yeah that was not fun either!

About a half hour after the doctor broke my water, I was ready to push!!  Baby descended quickly and after about 15 minutes of pushing (compared to 2 hours with Tavin), baby was born!!!

And it's a GIRL!!!!

It only took 4 hours to decide on her name.  We screened all the names (Vivian, Isabella, Addison, and Olivia) through Tavin and after we told him all of them, he shouted "Livie".  So Olivia it was!

Our first picture as a family of 4!

Olivia Jean was born on May 3 at 2:42 p.m.  Weighing 7 lb 6.9 oz and 20 inches long!

39 weeks (4/28 to 5/4)

Baby is the size of:  Watermelon
Weight Gain:  Dr. Scale on 4/29:  +37 (According to scale at home on 4/8: +30.  I've been too lazy to weigh myself at home...)
Sleep:  Doing okay.  I've been waking up around 4 a.m. most days and have a real hard time falling back to sleep.

Best moment:   Feeling like baby is coming....soon!
Worst moment:    Waiting for baby to come...soon!
Food cravings/aversions:    Sweet/salty...I made these to satisfy that craving.
What I miss:    Not feeling stressed and annoyed.   Towards the end of the day there is so much that I try to do at work and I end up running late.

What I’m looking forward to:  Having this kid and finding out whether it's a boy or girl!

Dr. Appt Update:   NST showed baby is good!  I had one contraction while hooked up so it was crazy to see.  I was checked again and this time progress!!  2-3 cm dilated and about 70% effaced!  She tried stripping membranes but baby's head was in the way.

The days following my appointment have been interesting.

  • Wednesday:  Contractions all day at work but nothing consistent.  They stopped shortly after supper.
  • Thursday:  Few contractions in the morning followed by all day low back pain and extreme exhaustion.  Dr.'s office said I didn't need to come in until the contractions became 7-10 minutes apart I should go in.
  • Friday:  Nothing until I went to the bathroom around 10:30 a.m. and lost, what I believe was, some of my mucus plug. For about 45 minutes after that I was having consistent contractions and then BAM, nothing :(  I was extremely disappointed.  We went out for Chinese after work in hopes of something happening!
  • Saturday:  Baby is here!!!
  • To Do:
    • Sanitize breast pump parts
    • Prepare freezer breakfast meals
    • wash down pack n play
    • wash bouncer cover, teething guards, and mesh bumper
    • prepare padsicles?
And here is my last bump pic, taken 2 days before baby was born!

And for comparison sake, both pics were taken 2 days before babies were born.  Baby #2 on left and Tavin on right.

38 weeks (4/21 to 4/27)

Baby is the size of:  Pumpkin
Weight Gain:  Dr. Scale on 4/23:  +35  (According to scale at home on 4/8: +30)

Sleep:  Doing better.  Despite having a constant nasal drainage all day I sleep wonderfully at night.

Best moment:   Our anniversary and the fact that Tavin laid himself down for a nap on both Saturday and Sunday.  He just walked downstairs to his room, closed the door, laid down and fell asleep :)
Worst moment:     Tavin's high spiked fever on Saturday evening.  It was up to 103 and he was shaking at one point.  Thankfully he slept it off.
Food cravings/aversions:    I'm so over the eating thing at this point.
What I miss:    My body.  I'm ready to have it back.  I feel horrible that I can't do stuff with Tavin.

What I’m looking forward to:   May!  We decided as long as baby hangs on until May we'd be happy.  Why you ask?  Because we are being selfish and eventually wanting to go places for our anniversary without the kids and I'd feel horrible if I missed my child's birthday.

Dr. Appt Update:    NST showed baby is doing great!  Dr. checked me and I have ZERO progress.  Baby's head is not even engaged :(  Talked a little about induction and will get a game plan together at my next appointment.  Looks like we have some work to do because I really do not want to get induced!
To Do:
  • Prepare freezer breakfast meals
  • Make lactation bars
  • wash down pack n play
  • wash bouncer cover, teething guards, and mesh bumper
  • prepare padsicles?

37 weeks (4/14 to 4/20)

Baby is the size of:  Winter Melon (???)
Weight Gain:  Dr. Scale on 4/16:  +33 (According to scale at home on 4/8: +30)
Sleep:  Horrible.  I would like to just rewind a week.

Best moment:   Finally having Tavin be like his normal self and going to sleep within 15 minutes after we leave the room :)
Worst moment:     Between Tavin's sleep regression (read:  toddler screaming at the top of his lungs for 2+ hours or waking up at 2 a.m and not going back to sleep!) and my cold, the entire week has been awful!
Food cravings/aversions:    Nothing really.  This cold has sacked my appetite for anything!
What I miss:    Breathing normal.

What I’m looking forward to:  Easter :)

Dr. Appt Update:    NST was good again.  No concerns other than my blood pressure being slightly elevated which the nurse said was due to my cold.
To Do:
  • Pack hospital bags
  • Prepare freezer breakfast meals
  • shampoo carpet
  • wash nursing bras/pads
  • prepare padsicles?

36 weeks (4/7 to 4/13)

Baby is the size of:  Honeydew
Weight Gain:  Dr. Scale on 4/9:  +32 (According to scale at home on 4/8: +30)
Sleep:  Going great!

Best moment:   Having a fully functional kitchen with all the stuff in it!
Worst moment:    Tavin getting sick and me catching it too.  Made it through Shaun's 2-3 week bout but my body just couldn't fight anymore :(
Food cravings/aversions:    Had a craving for some brownies.  I made these and they were pretty good the same day but not so much the following days.
What I miss:    A normal spring!  This up and down weather is crap!

What I’m looking forward to:  Getting over this cold!

Dr. Appt Update:  We met with the perinatologist on 4/9.  Baby is looking great!  Measuring about 6 pounds.  Dr. was watching baby's lungs to see if they were "practice breathing".  He even had to use a little alarm to wake baby up because baby was not cooperating  The best news:  I graduated!  I do not need to see him again.  Just continue my weekly NSTs.  He jokingly suggested being induced by 39 weeks!  Haha right buddy!  This baby is going to cook as long as it likes! TYVM!
Goals/To Do:
  • Pack hospital bag
  • Prepare freezer breakfast meals
  • shampoo carpet
  • get out baby equipment (swing, bath tub, etc)
  • put together rock n play
  • wash baby clothes Thanks to 2 days of some nicer weather we were able to wash them and hang them out :)
  • wash newborn diapers
  • wash nursing bras/pads
  • order breast pump Placed order on 4/9/14.
  • prepare padsicles?

Bump pic!

And a little comparison from 36 weeks last time

35 Weeks (3/31 to 4/6)

35 days left!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Yay!

Baby is the size of:  Coconut
Weight Gain:  Dr. Scale on 4/2:  +36 (According to scale at home on 3/26: +29)
Sleep:  Doing good.  Getting hard to turn over and get in and out of bed though.

Best moment:  Kitchen is complete and it looks fabulous!
Worst moment:     Shaun getting a cold...again!  Thankfully I've stayed immune!
Food cravings/aversions:  Nothing really.  I'm at a loss for what to eat.
What I miss:    Not struggling to bend over.

What I’m looking forward to:  Relaxing!  After the kitchen remodel and getting things back in order, I'm spent!

Dr. Appt Update:    NST looked great again even after having slipped on the ice the morning of my appointment.  Apparently I was supposed to go into labor & delivery and they were to monitor me for 3 hours!!  Oopsies!  But to my defense, baby was very active after the fall and there wasn't any signs of problems--Thank God!
Goals/To Do:
  • Pack hospital bag
  • Prepare freezer breakfast meals
  • shampoo carpet
  • get out baby equipment (swing, bath tub, etc)
  • put together rock n play
  • wash baby clothes
  • wash newborn diapers
  • wash nursing bras/pads
  • order breast pump
  • prepare padsicles?

34 weeks (3/24 to 3/30)

Baby is the size of:  Butternut Squash
Weight Gain:  Dr. Scale on 3/26:  +33(According to scale at home on 3/26: +29)
Sleep:  Still good.  Hips are starting to hurt a little bit more.

Best moment:  Starting the kitchen remodel!
Worst moment:     Starting the kitchen remodel!  It's no fun living out of packed up boxes!  Thankfully it's only going to be for 2 weeks!
Food cravings/aversions:    All things chocolate and peanut butter.  Thanks to this lovely bracket.
What I miss:    Not struggling to put shoes on.  Being able to play with Tavin without having problems getting up/down.

What I’m looking forward to: The kitchen being completed!

Dr. Appt Update:  Had our first NST on 3/26.  Everything looked fine.  Dr. was even nice enough to do an ultrasound to check baby's location and baby is now HEAD DOWN!  Hoping he/she decides to stay that way until May!
Goals:
  • Work out!  I suck at accomplishing this :(  Especially now that I've started my hypnobabies, there is just no time!
  • Prepare freezer breakfast meals.
  • Prepare lactation bars/cookies.  I really wish I could do this but our oven died and we haven't been able to bake anything for weeks.  We bought a new one this week so hopefully I can get started!  These will probably have to wait until after our kitchen remodel which is set to start the week of March 24.  Yay!  UPDATE:  Shaun started the cookies.  Just have to bake and freeze them this weekend.  Thanks Babe!  Done-cooked them up on Saturday night :)
Wednesday, March 26, 2014

33 weeks (3/17 to 3/23)

Baby is the size of:  Durian Fruit (Does anybody know what this is?)
Weight Gain:  Dr. Scale on 3/24:  +29 (According to scale at home on 3/13: +24)
Sleep:  Getting rough.  It's hard to turn over.  Andplusalso, getting up in the morning is no fun!

Best moment:  Celebrating Tavin's birthday!
Worst moment:     Finding out baby is breech!  Apparently sometime over the last week, baby had a flipping party!  On top of that this sciatica/butt pain is killing me!
Food cravings/aversions:    Wasn't really a craving but I had to pick something up near a Cousin's Sub and it was to die for!  I forgot how good subs can actually be!
What I miss:   Not walking around in pain.

What I’m looking forward to:   Our kitchen remodel starting.  I'm so excited to be getting rid of these cabinets and having the extra space!  Also looking forward to this baby flipping back to head down!

Dr. Appt Update:  We met with the perinatologist on March 17.  I was unsure of him at first but he turned out to be pretty cool.  He said that he sees cases such as mine about once a month (who knew it was that common?).   I likely will not need a c-section as the concern is mostly with baby's growth and then the delivery of the placenta in making sure it all comes out.  He suggested having an ultrasound after delivery to make sure it all came out.  I will see him again in 3 weeks and have NSTs the 2 weeks in between.
Goals:

32 weeks (3/10 to 3/16)

Baby is the size of:  Squash
Weight Gain:  Dr. Scale on 3/12:  +30 (According to scale at home on 3/13: +24)
Sleep:  Mostly wonderful.  Sadie has decided a middle of the night potty break is much needed. I'm hoping that when the weather turns nice and we wear her out some more on walks she'll stop doing it!

Best moment:  Seeing baby on the ultrasound and finding out placenta is up and away from my cervix.
Worst moment:     The news I was dreading...I do have a bilobed placenta with velamentous cord insertion.  Meaning the placenta is in two hunks and the cord is inserted into the middle.

Warning:  The pictures you are about to see may be disturbing!  The pictures show the difference between a normal placenta and a bilobed placenta.

Source:  Wikipedia

Source:  this blog I stumbled upon while researching info about the condition.

Due to the cord insertion issue, I will now be having weekly appointments for NSTs (non stress tests).  Not looking forward to spending that much time in the hospital but whatever it takes to keep me and baby healthy I'll do it.
Food cravings/aversions:    I still have no clue these days!  I'm sort of over eating....
What I miss:   Warm weather!  This winter has been brutal!

What I’m looking forward to:   Celebrating Tavin's 2nd birthday!!
Goals:
  • Work out!  I suck at accomplishing this :(  Especially now that I've started my hypnobabies, there is just no time!
  • Prepare breakfast meals.
  • Prepare lactation bars/cookies.  I really wish I could do this but our oven died and we haven't been able to bake anything for weeks.  We bought a new one this week so hopefully I can get started!  These will probably have to wait until after our kitchen remodel which is set to start the week of March 24.  Yay!

Bonus-pictures!!

One from the ultrasound
The tech said that baby has a lot of hair!  You could even see the little spikes in the 2d images.

And the bump!

31 weeks (3/3 to 3/9)

Baby is the size of:  Pineapple
Weight Gain:  Dr. Scale on 2/26:  +25 (According to scale at home on 2/25: +24)
Sleep:  Great!  I should really take this off since my answer has been (thankfully) the same every week!

Best moment:  Hanging out with friends for (non-alcoholic) drinks and food!
Worst moment:     Moving Tavin to his toddler bed :(  I so was not ready for him to move.  I'm in denial that he is growing up so fast!
Food cravings/aversions:    Nothing really.  I'm starting to get the "I'm so hungry but I don't know what to eat"  to "I feel nauseous and should eat something before I throw up"  Fun times!
What I miss:   Wearing normal clothes.  This baby is riding so low that all my pants (even maternity pants) don't stay up!

What I’m looking forward to:   Our new stove!
Goals:
  • Work out!  I suck at accomplishing this :(  Especially now that I've started my hypnobabies, there is just no time!
  • Prepare freezer meals.  I have everything planned.  Just need to find a weekend (and enough room in our freezer) to do it all.  UPDATE:  We made most of the meals over the weekend.  Just have the breakfast meals to go!
  • Prepare lactation bars/cookies.  I really wish I could do this but our oven died and we haven't been able to bake anything for weeks.  We bought a new one this week so hopefully I can get started!
Tuesday, March 4, 2014

30 weeks (2/24 to 3/2)

Baby is the size of:  Cucumber (not sure how accurate this is....sure baby may be as long as one but definitely seems bigger than that!)
Weight Gain:  Dr. Scale on 2/26:  +25 (According to scale at home on 2/25: +24)
Sleep:  Great!  I should really take this off since my answer has been (thankfully) the same every week!

Best moment: Being able to switch our contract phones to no-contract and save money!
Worst moment:     Dealing with the phone company in switching our phones.  It was ridiculous!
Food cravings/aversions:    Baby is starting to get picky about what I eat.  Some nights I'll be fine, others I have indigestion.
What I miss:   Warm weather?  Can I say it every week until it warms up?

What I’m looking forward to:   The 32 week ultrasound so I can make sure LO is okay!
Goals:
  • Work out!  I suck at accomplishing this :(  Especially now that I've started my hypnobabies, there is just no time!
  • Prepare freezer meals.  I have everything planned.  Just need to find a weekend (and enough room in our freezer) to do it all.
  • Prepare lactation bars/cookies
  • Start organizing craft/guest room We started working on it.  It's a slow and not finished process.  The plan is to re-use our old kitchen cabinets/countertop for a computer/sewing desk/storage.  So until that is out, it won't be completely finished. We finished!  It actually looks like a room again instead of a storage shed!  There are still a few minor things to put away but it's liveable/sleepable.
Tuesday, February 25, 2014

29 weeks (2/17 to 2/23)

Baby is the size of:  Acorn Squash
Weight Gain:  Dr. Scale on 2/12:  +24 (According to scale at home on 2/11: +18)
Sleep:  Can't get enough.

Best moment:  Passing my 3 hour glucose test!  Thank God I can still have Briqs!!
Worst moment:   Finding out I failed my one hour glucose test and having go through the 3 hour.  Never again!!
Food cravings/aversions:   Nothing really.
What I miss:   Warm weather!  Someone please tell Mother Nature that it is the end of February, not the beginning of January!

What I’m looking forward to:   Snow and ice melting.  It sucks doing the pregnant lady shuffle/walk on it!  I've already fallen numerous times..blah!
Goals:
  • Work out!
  • Finishing decorating Tavin's big boy room.  It's all painted.  Just have to add the finishing touches :)  We have it 99% done.  Just have to add a few things and move his stuff from the nursery down to the room!

Best moment:  Having Shaun come back home :)
Worst moment:  Taking the glucose test.  That drink is just nasty and then the tech bruised my arm so bad it looks like I was beat up :(
Food cravings/aversions:   Briqs.  I want it all.the.time!  How could anyone resist this?

What I miss:   Not having to put boots on.  It's getting harder and harder every week.

What I’m looking forward to:   Nothing really exciting is happening soon.  I have my 32 week ultrasound set but that's not for another month!
Goals:
  • Work out!
  • Figure out sleeping arrangements (i.e. buy another crib, move Tavin to a toddler bed?)
  • Update:  We found Tavin a toddler bed and will be moving him into a "big boy" room after his birthday.  Hopefully we can get it done by then!

Best moment:  Watching my belly protrude with jabs from the baby!  It's sooo nice to finally feel baby!
Worst moment:  First, Shaun leaving for Denver.  Second, Tavin throwing up and having to deal with 3 furbabies and cleaning it up....bleh!

26 weeks (1/27 to 2/2)

Baby is the size of:  Head of lettuce
Weight Gain:  Dr. Scale on 1/15:  +17 (According to scale at home on 1/14: +13)
Sleep:  Still going good!

Best moment:  Getting organized around the house and emptying out the "craft room".
Worst moment:  Feeling stressed in getting ready for work.  Felt like there was never enough time in the morning and that I was doing everything!
Food cravings/aversions:   Nothing really this week.  I've been trying to eat healthier so my weight doesn't get out of control!
What I miss:   Above 20 degree temps....is it really too much to ask for?

What I’m looking forward to:  Feeling accomplished with getting organized!
Goals:
  • Work out!
  • Sew! Sew! Sew!  So many things to sew so the room can be made into Tavin's room.  Update:  Just when I think I'm almost done, I find more projects!!  I really need to stop while I'm ahead!  I'm finally done!  There are still things I could sew, but I got everything done I wanted and then some :)
  • Figure out sleeping arrangements (i.e. buy another crib, move Tavin to a toddler bed?)
  • Update:  We found Tavin a toddler bed and will be moving him into a "big boy" room after his birthday.  Hopefully we can get it done by then!

Food cravings/aversions:   So hungry for chips and sandwich.
What I miss:   Wine :)

What I’m looking forward to:  Shaun's time off from his second job (granted it'll suck not to have the extra money for the kitchen) but hopefully we can get lots of stuff done!
Goals:
  • Work out!
  • Sew! Sew! Sew!  So many things to sew so the room can be made into Tavin's room.  Update:  Just when I think I'm almost done, I find more projects!!  I really need to stop while I'm ahead!

Sleep:  Still going good!

Best moment:  Starting to feel baby move more and more.
Worst moment:  In addition to the anterior placenta, found out I have a bilobed placenta-half posterior/half anterior.  Dr. said nothing to be concerned about right now as long as baby is growing.  They will do another ultrasound at 32 weeks and then non-stress tests after that.  Could be some complications during delivery that we need to watch.
Food cravings/aversions:   Ice cream!  All.the.time.
What I miss:   A night out

What I’m looking forward to:  Trivia!

Best moment:  Seeing the little bean and knowing they are healthy!
Worst moment:  Finding out I do have an anterior placenta.  Sucks that I won't be able to feel this baby move for a while yet.
Food cravings/aversions:   Ice cream...chocolate with peanut butter!
What I miss:   Long walks with Sadie.  I seriously wish this weather would make up it's mind!

What I’m looking forward to:  Getting the house organized.  Seems like it's such a mess!
Goals:
  • Sew! Sew! Sew!  So many things to sew so the room can be made into Tavin's room.  Update:  I'm actually starting to make some headway.  Only have a few things left on the list to sew!  Super thankful that I've been able to get stuff done!
  • Figure out sleeping arrangements (i.e. buy another crib, move Tavin to a toddler bed?)
  • Prepare freezer meals
  • Prepare lactation bars/cookies
  • Start organizing craft/guest room

22 weeks (12/30/13 to 1/5/14)

Baby is the size of:  Papaya
Weight Gain:  Dr. Scale on 12/19:  +7 (According to scale at home on 1/2 +10)
Sleep:  Ok.  My hips are starting to bother me.  Time for regular stretching/visits to the chiro.

Best moment:  An impromptu trip to my parents.  Tavin wanted to see Grandma/Grandpa.  Who am I to say no to that request?
Worst moment:  Shaun's work hours...so glad the holidays are done with!
Food cravings/aversions:   Blah...I'm not even going there!  I thought I wanted some pizza, turned out it didn't taste as great as I thought it was going to....
What I miss:   Working out.  I'm hoping that since most of the sewing is done that I'll be able to do a little more.

What I’m looking forward to:  Seeing baby!!

21 weeks (12/23 to 12/29)

Baby is the size of:  Pomegrante
Weight Gain:  Dr. Scale on 12/19:  +7 (According to scale at home on 12/18 +3)

Sleep:  Sort of crappy from not being in my own bed.
Best moment:  Watching Tavin's excitement at Christmas
Worst moment:  Another "argument" with Shaun....
Food cravings/aversions:   Does wine count as food?
What I miss:   Normal clothes.  My bump feels huge already and I'm running out of winter clothes to accommodate the bump.

What I’m looking forward to:  The anatomy scan, we rescheduled to January 6!
